Ferrous Metal

Our vehicle processing center (below) is a state-of-the-art facility that is used to remove the gasoline, oil, coolant, Freon, tires and mercury switches from junk vehicles. We recover all fluids and gasses in an efficient manner that is unduplicated in the United States. This environmentally friendly facility removes about one-third of all the vehicle mercury switches that are currently being removed and recycled in Wisconsin.  Once the vehicles are processed, they are shipped to our shredder facility to be destroyed and recycled.

All inbound material entering our yards is weighed on our certified public scales and passes through our state-of-the-art radiation system, thus assuring our employees, customers and the public a safe commodity.

The 7000 horsepower shredder processes the bulk of our ferrous scrap which includes automobiles, post consumer and industrial scrap. Our shredder uses the largest motor in Southeast Wisconsin. The material is reduced to about the size of your fist  and is separated into three streams.

  1. Pure steel that is ready for shipment to steel mills and foundries.
  2. Non-metallic, or as we call it, “fluff”, that is processed further and used by area landfills for daily cover.
  3. Mixed nonferrous that is separated further and sold as special items.

The 7000 horsepower motor is powerful enough to shred a whole automobile, including an engine, in about 20 seconds.

We have several other yards that process various types of scrap, for instance, our Water Street Yard (below).  We process ferrous scrap that is too large or bulky to be shredded. Typically this material comes from demolition jobs and industrial accounts. This scrap is cut down to size with either our 1000 ton shears, one of our cranes with a shear attachment or manually torched into pieces. The material is then sorted and shipped to steel mills and foundries.
