Ferrous Metal

This facility is a state-of-the-art vehicle-processing center used to remove all contaminants from vehicles before they are shredded. This includes the gasoline, oil, coolant, Freon, tires and mercury switches. We recover all fluids and gasses in an efficient manner that is unduplicated in the United States. Then we crush the vehicles and send them to our shredder. This environmentally friendly facility removes approximately 1/3 of all the vehicle mercury switches that are currently removed in Wisconsin.
All inbound material coming into our yards goes across scales similar to this one. That is done not only to weigh and pay the customer, but to pass the scrap through our state-of-the-art radiation system, thus assuring our employees, customers and the public a safe commodity.

The 7000 horsepower shredder processes the bulk of our ferrous scrap, including automobiles, post consumer and industrial scrap. This large shredder uses the largest motor in SE Wisconsin to reduce material to about fist-size and separate the feedstock into three streams.
- Pure ferrous that is ready for shipment to steel mills and foundries
- Non-metallic’s (“fluff”) that is processed further and used by area landfills for daily cover.
- Mixed nonferrous that requires additional processing
The 7000 horsepower motor is powerful enough to shred a vehicle in about 20 seconds.

This yard processes ferrous scrap that is too large or bulky to be shredded. Typically this is from demolition jobs and industry. This scrap is baled or sheared in an 1128-ton shear and shipped to steel mills and foundries.

This yard (below) processes ferrous scrap that is too large or bulky to be shredded. Typically this is from demolition jobs and industry. This scrap is baled or sheared in an 1128-ton shear and shipped to steel mills and foundries. This ferrous yard (right) handles primarily very large, bulky scrap that is either torched or sheared on a 1000-ton shear. It also has a deep-water slip with a gantry crane to load/unload ships or barges with scrap steel and pig iron.
