Nonferrous Metal

Along with buying nonferrous metals through our retail buying operation, we process the shredded nonferrous metals through various machines.  One process is our Media Plant where we separate aluminum from other metals using heavy media.  Some of our other processes use photo recognition and metal sensing devices to sort and/or clean the metals which are then shipped to smelters all over the world.

One of the processing operations in the nonferrous warehouse is an HRB baler. Scrap is compressed into rectangular bales, similar to what a trash compactor might produce, only on a larger and cleaner scale. The Baler compresses using 2500 pounds per square inch of pressure.

Amongst all the other products we handle, we bale almost 2/3 of the aluminum cans discarded in Southeast Wisconsin. Each bale (right) weighs between 1,000 – 1,300 lbs and contains an average of 42,000 aluminum cans.  These bales are shipped to aluminum can smelters all over North America.

At our United Furnace (lower left), we separate aluminum into various grades, melt the aluminum and depending on their metallic chemistry, make notch bars or sows that are sold and shipped to mills, foundries and smelters for remelting.  We can melt aluminum at a rate of 1,000,000 pounds per month.

All of the nonferrous scrap arriving in van trailers (right) from suppliers, are handled through our massive warehouse. The bulk of this material comes from other dealers and industry and includes stainless steel, aluminum, red brass, yellow brass and copper. Today, the Nonferrous Department processes and ships about 250 million pounds of scrap annually.
